Must Listen
Check out this great page from NPR discussing some of the greatest recordings to never make it onto CD. Luminaries such as Stephen Thomas Earlewine and one of the managers from Amoeba pick their faves. All of the selections are fantastic, but be sure to check out the selection by Lara Perigrinelli (Shirley Horn singing "I Thought About You" co-written by my favorite Johnny Mercer).

Worse than Freedom Fries
Are they joking? The Republicans have a plan afoot more evil than renaming Washington National Airport to Reagan.... CNN reports here on a move to place Reagan on the dime!

Test Yourself
For those of you who enjoyed the "Wu Name Generator," you may enjoy Rum & Monkey. For example, I learned I was Optimus Prime by taking the Colossal Death Robot test. (In case you're interested, my Wu name is "World Class Programmah.")

Paul Clinton, You're no Bill Clinton
CNN is not the place to go for movie reviews. Here, P. Clinton gives a stellar review to "The Last Samurai." The preview made my stomach turn, and I'd be shocked to learn that in fact it's better than Eyes Wide Shut or Minority Report as the reviewer claims. As far as quality of writing, this piece probably wouldn't run in many college newspapers. So what I'm saying is that Paul Clinton should be fired.

I Want to Ride My Bicycle
I had the odd experience recently of biking past a bike cop who was stopped for a red light. One of the major advantages of riding a bike (especially in a city) is that you don't have to obey traffic laws. Such is not the case apparently for the unfortunate cops. Sigh.
Smoking Sucks
Caught a bit of the hearing re the proposed smoking ban. I was disappoitned to see a rep from the 9:30 club (perhaps she was the owner?) quite opposed. I don't know how the numbers pan out in the end, but those who oppose the ban argue as if it will drive smokers completely away while not attracting those who would otherwise stay away. Surely this is not the case. Those who can't smoke will still go out to drink, and there are those who go out less than they would otherwise because they don't want to smell like an ashtray.

I thought bondage directors were better planners than this.

Dahlia Does it Again
With doozies like this one, how much longer before someone snatches her away from Slate (unless she's already making large $) for a more consistent "publication?"

I'm on the Patch
Is there anything more old-school than patching bike tubes? (Maybe decoder rings....) Well, I finally ran out of spare tubes for my tire. Construction is everywhere in DC, and it's inevitable that I hit rocks dumped by trucks or nails left in the road. Argh. So I devoted about an hour to wrestling with tire changes and patching all of my stockpiled holy tubes. It was a wild night of glue fumes and rubber (not latex). Key was filling up the sink and searching for tiny bubbles after submerging my handiwork to ensure the deed was done properly. Although I only discovered this after the fact, the Oklahoma Bike Society always comes through and here's a link to some handy advice for you bikers.

Senseless Slamming of Sensimilla
I earlier blogged about a very catchy ad, from Change the Climate, that was carried by Metro buses. The Post now has this piece on Rep. Istook (R-OK) and his attempt to cut federal funds to Metro.

Ouch
The Seventh Circuit issued this panel decision, written by Judge Easterbrook. It's a scathing opinion in which the court criticizes counsel for mistakenly treating an LLC like a corporation for purposes of diversity jurisdiction (good ol' Sec. 1332). While a corporation is a "citizen" in the places of its incorporation and principle place of business, an LLC is a "citizen" of each of its general/limited partners' states.

LAT has this piece on how Dinh and Chertoff seem to be second-guessing the progeny of the PATRIOT Act-- namely, Padilla in a naval brig incommunicado for a very very long time.

Appealing Indeed
I highly recommend clicking over to How Appealing (link at left) to read the 20 questions interview with Judge Posner. He has a great line about his cat and interesting thoughts about the 9th Circuit.
