Natty Gallery
I finally made it to the fantastic Romare Bearden exhibit at the National Gallery of Art today, and I also checked out the Picasso series, "Cubist Portraits of Fernande Olivier." I'm sure there's something to ponder about the connection between Bearden's collages and the "found sounds" element that's so appealing in the likes of DJ Shadow, but I'm not sure what it is. Certainly many of Bearden's collages, such as this one, are more grounded in history, race, and politics than Shadow's tracks, but there are others, such as this one, that seem to work more on a level of landscape and color, which is where I would place most of my favorite tracks of Shadow's.

Further to my 9/29 post, USA Today reports, and the NYT also reports, that the SC has declined to hear a case in which South Carolina charged a pregnant mother with murder when her stillborn fetus tested positive for cocaine. Because the Court won't reconsider the ruling that upheld the conviction, the mother loses and the state wins. This is in contrast to Ferguson v. City of Charleston in which the drug-positive pregnant women won and the state lost. In the latter case, the SC held that warrantless arrests of pregnant women who tested positive for cocaine was a Fourth Amendment violation of the right against unreasonable search and seizure.

Here's why I won't be renewing my subscription to the Atlantic Monthly: this month, they include a "college admissions survey" section, the equivalent of a "personality test" in terms of quality magazine material. Last month, they included a weak piece entitled "The Dark Art of Interrogation" by Mark Bowden, author of Black Hawk Down. I haven't studied the Atlantic's history, but I wonder to what extent its hawkish tendencies are a marketing ploy to set itself apart from the very anti-administration New Yorker. If the covers are any indicators, the New Yorker has George Bush as a cowboy wearing blinders, and the Atlantic has an image of a man with his arms bound behind his back... only the point is not to criticize the administratoin but to suggest that Americans' understanding of "torture" may be too simplistic.
